Workshops

Riley Lee co-founded Taikoz in 1997. He began playing the shakuhachi in 1971 as a student of Chikuho Sakai until 1980, and with Katsuya Yokoyama since 1984. In 1980, he became the first non-Japanese to attain the rank of dai shihan or Grand Master, and from 1973 was the first non-Japanese to play taiko professionally by touring internationally as a full-time performer with Ondekoza. Riley completed his BA and MA degrees in music at the University of Hawai’i, and received his PhD degree in ethnomusicology from the University of Sydney. In 2003, 2009 and 2011, he was made Visiting Fellow at Princeton University.

WORKSHOP CONTENT
The workshop is for anyone who has, is, or might be learning any skill that requires practice.

It is also for anyone who performs in front of an audience, whether only on occasion or regularly, and regardless of the size of the audience, be it a small, informal gathering of friends or a television audience of millions.

The workshop will be particularly geared towards, but not limited to people who play music.
The workshop is for people who want to improve their level of playing (or acting or speaking or dancing or figure skating, etc) as well as their ability to maintain that level of playing in front of an audience.

Participants in the workshops will gain a better understanding of how ‘practice’ differs from ‘performance’ and why. This understanding will give them a way to use their limited practice time more efficiently. It also might help reduce some of the psychological baggage that drags most of us back from the level of performance that we all want.

We will also look at how ‘practice performance’ differs from both ‘practice’ and ‘performance’ and how an understanding of these differences might help both.

We will discuss the questions: What sort of performance we do want? What makes a good performance? How does a good performance differ from a great one?

Finally, this workshop will have a participatory element; everyone will have the opportunity to learn by performing for others. Musical instruments are not required. How will this work? Please come to the workshop and find out!

Fees
This 2 hour workshop is running at the '20' price of $40 full fee or $30 for Taikoz students who have booked an annual membership with our school.
