Member since 2014

Sophia became a member of the ensemble in 2014 after successfully auditioning for Taikoz’s Individual Development Program in 2011, followed by Taikoz Mainstage Associate Player status in 2012.

 As a taiko performer Sophia has toured nationally and internationally, collaborating with many esteemed artists and musicians, most notably Anandavalli, Sandy Evans, Kodo, Kaoru Watanabe, Yoko Fujimoto, Yoshikazu Fujimoto, Chieko Kojima, and composer Lachlan Skipworth and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

 Sophia regularly travels to Japan for study with Iwasaki Onikenbai Hozonkai, the original masters of the dance-music form known as Onikenbai. She also performs Onikenbai in the Kitakami Michinoku Geinou Matsuri. Sophia has also undergone two weeks intensive study in New York with famed taiko-shinobue artist Kaoru Watanabe.

Sophia has been heavily involved in such prestigious projects and tours as Kodo and Taikoz In Concert2012 Australian tour, the World Taiko Gatheringin Los Angeles in 2014, Taikoz’s 2016 Chi Udaka Australian and Indian tours, and most recently, Taikoz Meets The SSOat the Sydney Opera House.

Sophia completed a Bachelor of Music at Melbourne University and has performed with the Australian Youth Orchestra and the Sydney Symphony Sinfonia. She currently teaches in the Taikoz Taiko School, with a particular focus on the taiko/musical development of young children.
