Last Sunday, Taikoz had the amazing privilege, challenge & experience of performing in what must be one of the most amazing spaces in Sydney – and possibly even the world! Judith Neilson’s incredible Dangrove storage facility (for the fabulous art gallery, White Rabbit) was the place-space-concept-environment of a site-specific work performed by Taikoz, Taikoz Associate Players and calligraphy artist Tomoko Oka.

For me personally, it was a career highlight – I mean, what more could an artist want than to be given carte blanche to create whatever took my creative fancy? And so, in the huge, reverberant expanse of Dangrove, our program gradually unfolded through a series of new & existing works that exploited the incredible depth and height of the building, it’s 3.5 second reverb time, it’s internal infrastructure and beautiful natural light. Four odaiko placed at the extremes of the space – the two end ones being over a 100 metres apart! – 12 roving, gently chiming temple bowls accompanying Ryuji’s stunning shinobue solo played high above the audience, electronica harmonies with Kerryn’s mellifluous singing resounding behind the audience, and the coup de theatre, Tomoko’s magnificent 4m x 2m shodō of ‘shinju’ (‘pearl’) gently rising above the audience in total, captivated silence at the end… stunning!

Thank you to Judith and all the staff at Dangrove – an amazing team that supported our wild artistic venture not just with professionalism, but enthusiastic delight.
