Elements I in Japanese Thursday - Term 4 2022

Term 4

Fees

$370 Full / $335 Concession

Intermediate

Japanese studies in action! Immerse yourself in Japanese language and culture while learning to play the awe-inspiring taiko.

Designed for students with some taiko playing experience and elementary to intermediate Japanese language skills, you will explore the foundations of different taiko styles, as well as Japanese language in the context of taiko playing.
English and Japanese will be used for instructions, however, gradually the course will equip the students to understand a class fully taught in Japanese.

The course is led by experienced teachers with qualification in Japanese language teaching, as well as vast experience in Japanese cultural studies and performing arts.

Key musical learning points are:
  • Studying a variety of traditional taiko styles
  • Learning the accompanying kuchi shoga (taiko rhythm vocals)
  • Learning and practicing a musical composition
  • Practicing pieces called renshu that involve specific musical and technical challenges
  • Developing general musicianship

Key Japanese learning points are:
  • Building vocabulary
  • Sentence structure and grammar
  • Listening and speaking skills
  • Learning about aspects of Japanese culture and taiko history

Wondering if this class is right for you?
Although this is not a beginners class, students who have no prior experience in taiko may be able to participate depending on their background within Japanese language, taiko or music.
Alternatively, prospective students may also participate in a separately organised workshop and be provided with simple Japanese study material.

Please send us an inquiry if you are unsure if the course is right for you, and we’ll be happy to discuss your possibilities!
