Taikoz is thrilled to present a true master of the unique traditional taiko style that hails from Hachijo Island, Japan – Mr Hiroo Asanuma!
Hachijodaiko is a yoko-uchi (side-on) style of taiko playing unique to Hachijo Island. It is beautifully flamboyant and powerful to see and hear, and Hiroo Asanuma is a truly great master of the style. At 69 years of age, Asanuma-sensei is a font of wisdom and knowledge and has the distinction of instructing many players in the style, not only on his native Hachijo Island, but also throughout Japan and internationally. And now he will be here in Australia!
Asanuma-sensei has devised a series of workshops that will cater to taiko players of all levels of experience. Held in the Taikoz Ultimo Dojo (Sydney), participants will have a unique chance to learn from a master of one of the great traditional taiko styles. The long weekend intensive workshops are designed for taiko players who have some experience of the Hachijodaiko style and taiko players with no Hachijodaiko experience.
